Michael R. Gibson

Michael R. Gibson is an Associate Professor of Communication Design at the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design. He has held this post for nine years, and has 13 years of university-level design education experience.

He is strongly committed to utilizing design processes to positively catalyze social, political and economic change. His original and applied research in design has addressed issues in education, children’s health, media ethics and consumerism. He believes that design education and
visual literacy can provide today’s students with a viable means to contribute to the types of collaborative initiatives that can help instigate a re-democratization of an American society that is deeply divided along class lines.

He has maintained a professional visual communication design consultancy since 1987, which he uses as a means to try to increase his understanding of how and why design functions as a memetic force, as something that is much more than being “all about the visual.”
