Narrative as the Primary Design Fundamental
Tony Brock, NC State University

Narratives are a vital tool for communication, with the oral traditions of ancient cultures through elaborate Hollywood epics of today. What is the role of narrative in design education, and how can it be properly integrated into traditional visual design pedagogy?

The digital realm facilitates new and unique constructs for story telling, albeit algorithmic or accidental. This session seeks presentations whereby narrative studies and narrative structure are taught as an integral tool for communication. Special consideration will be given to narrative projects that extend beyond familiar static and time-based formats to experimental forms of narrative like blogs, wikis, video games, and other forms of interactive storytelling.
